Cunucu Dog “Dushi-Aruba” Is A Celebrity In New York

For the third year in a row, a Cunucu Dog named Dushi-Aruba has been named Pet of the Year by the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center in Rockland County, New York. Each year the shelter sponsors the contest and creates a calendar, which is sold to the public to raise funds for the Center’s rescue operations. Here’s a local news article about this year’s event.

The six-year-old Cunucu Dog is owned by Heather Vokes, who raised more than $3000 for the shelter.

Ms. Vokes has accomplished a lot with her dog since rescuing him. Recently he became a canine good citizen and certified therapy dog. Read all about him at Animal Rights Aruba. This is a committed organization of hardworking animal lovers which has made great strides in recent years trying to find homes for stray cats and dogs on the island. Please consider a donation.

In a prior post I wrote about the Cunucu Dog. There is some dispute as to whether it can actually be classified as a “breed”, but that seems irrelevant anyway. I am still searching for anyone with knowledge of any controlled breeding programs being done with these dogs, so please leave a comment if you have any information.

    Hello there,
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Yesenia – everyone calls me ‘Yessy’ and I work at the Contreras Veterinary Clinic in Aruba. When anyone adopts a dog here and wants to take one or more home, I’m the person in charge to help with all the procedures, therefor, I know a lot of people who adopted Arubian Strays that turned out to be awesome dogs! There’s an interesting web-site with plenty of information and true facts about the Arubian ‘breed’, please visit http://www.arubiancunucudog.org and you’ll be amazed! Cesar will appreciate it! (Although he rests in peace.) Give me some feedback, we can work together on finding volunteers to take dogs & cats home.
    Just let me know!

    Best regards,
    Yessy
